Who Can Serve Process in Michigan
Governed by Michigan Court Rules 2.103–2.107.

Under MCR 2.103, service of process in Michigan may be made by the sheriff or sheriff's deputy, a court officer appointed for that purpose, or any other legally competent adult who is not a party. Michigan also permits service by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested, under MCR 2.105(A)(2) — making Michigan one of several states where mail service is a primary option, not a fallback. Served 123 LLC coordinates sheriffs, court officers, and qualified private servers plus manages certified-mail service for cooperative defendants.

Personal service under MCR 2.105(A)(1) is the most common default. If personal service and mail service both fail, MCR 2.105(I) authorizes the court to order alternate service — including tacking (affixing to a prominent location at the residence), posting, publication, or sending by mail to last known address. Michigan's MCR 2.105(I) alternate-service motion is commonly used for evasive defendants. Entity service is under MCR 2.105(D)–(H). Long-arm jurisdiction uses MCL §§600.701–600.785.

Key rule to know: Michigan's MCR 2.105(I) alternate service motion is a powerful tool when a defendant is evading. The court can authorize tacking, posting at the residence, first-class mail, or publication — often approved in a single motion when the attempt log shows diligent efforts. Every Michigan case with an evasive defendant should have an attempt log built for that motion. MCR 2.103, 2.104, 2.105, 2.106, 2.107; MCL §§600.701–600.785, 600.2164a

What this means for your case

Michigan has two peninsulas and some of the longest travel distances in the Midwest. A process server in Metro Detroit can't realistically serve Marquette in the UP without route planning and cost. Served 123 LLC routes regionally — Metro Detroit, West Michigan, Mid-Michigan, Northern Lower Peninsula, and Upper Peninsula all get servers who live in-region.

FAQ
Michigan Service of Process — Common Questions
Answered under the Michigan Court Rules. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.
Who can legally serve process in Michigan?
Under MCR 2.103, service may be made by a sheriff, deputy sheriff, court officer, or any legally competent adult who is not a party. Michigan also permits service by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested, under MCR 2.105(A)(2).
What Michigan rule governs service of process?
Michigan Court Rules 2.103–2.107. MCR 2.105(A) covers methods on individuals, 2.105(D)–(H) cover entities, 2.105(I) covers court-ordered alternate service, 2.106 covers publication, and 2.104 covers the proof of service.
Can I serve by certified mail in Michigan?
Yes. Under MCR 2.105(A)(2), service may be made by registered or certified mail with return receipt requested. The signed return receipt is proof of service.
What is MCR 2.105(I) alternate service?
When personal and mail service both fail and the defendant is evading, MCR 2.105(I) authorizes the court to order alternate service — including tacking at the residence, posting, first-class mail, or publication. We prepare the motion and attempt log as part of rush and priority service.
Do you serve in all 83 Michigan counties?
Yes. Served 123 LLC covers every one of the 83 Michigan counties — both peninsulas. Hub counties (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Kent, Washtenaw, Ingham, Genesee) offer same-day rush capacity.
What must a Michigan Proof of Service include?
Under MCR 2.104, proof of service must state date, time, place, and manner of service and identify the person served. Mail service is proven by the return receipt. Non-officer service is proven by affidavit.
How fast can Served 123 LLC complete Michigan service?
Same-day service when we receive the request before 11:00 AM local time in Wayne (Detroit), Oakland, Macomb, Kent (Grand Rapids), Washtenaw (Ann Arbor), Ingham (Lansing), and Genesee (Flint). Next-day priority statewide. Upper Peninsula routine service typically requires 5–10 business days.
Do you serve out-of-state subpoenas in Michigan?
Yes. Michigan has adopted the UIDDA at MCL §600.2164a. We handle clerk intake, Michigan subpoena issuance, and service statewide. See our Michigan subpoena domestication page.
